How hopeful are you that the rebels will renounce violence and the country embraces peace?

People are very optimistic with the 12-point agreement, and initiatives taken on the basis of people’s movement to restore peace after the restoration of parliament. The eight-point agreement proves that the rebels stick to their political commitment of renouncing violence. At UML’s initiative, Maoist Chairman Prachanda came to Baluwatar and made public the eight-point agreement, which will be endorsed by the parliament. It obviously strengthens the 12-point pact signed on November 22. And in turn, it reignites hopes for a peaceful solution to the conflict. This also sends a message to the rebels that they do not need to walk out of the dialogue and resume violence to seek justice in a way they did in the past .

What would be the role of the UML from now onwards in resolving the conflict?

Nepal: Now the UML must look forward to restoring peace. The country must be brought back on to the track. And, to do that, ethics of politics becomes imperative. That no one should deviate from the party line nor should any one try to derail the peace process is what we believe in. All of us must show accountability towards the people and do the job as per people’s wish. We do not believe in conspiracy, deceit and duplicity. We believe in honesty and integrity.
