Hey folks out there in NYC,

Thinking of touring the NYC for the whole of next week. What are the a ttractions??? Accomodations near bus/subway lines????.........Heard that parking availability sucks.........so any idea on where to park my baby.........any idea or help in this regard

have you ever hung around Tundikhel, bagbazaar and dillibazaar..,its the same....so no worries...where what and how....poor deluded newcomer in newyork...oh yeah if you haven't seen lights in your life go to Time sq..for thamel type atmosphere..west village..for bagmati bridge..long island..and that's for golf courses as well..rest is like putalisadak and singhadurbar...only couple of big buildings...thats it...

If you're fun person..you'll see the same fun things if you're not well don't think its gonna turn out like in Hindi movies....hahhaha forgettaboutit...

don't forget to visit jackson heights. it reminds you some parts of india.
Driving in NY makes you feel like driving in KTM city.
i suggest you to take metro rather than car other wise you will end of wasting your time in traffic jams. remember NY traffic = KTM traffic.

depends on what your interests are- nyc offers pretty much everything! yeah, jackson heights is an intersting place and seems to attract a lot of indians, nepalis, and tibetans. although there is also a strong japanese and korean community there.

my advice is to pick up a copy of time out ny or the village voice upon arriving (preferrably the voice as it's a free publication and can be found in despensers on many street corners). st marks' place in the east village is interesting and there is some super good pizza at due amici (corner of 3rd ave and 12th street right up the block). central park is pretty incredible- as it is a HUGE park in the middle of nyc. st john's cathedral up by 116th or 126th and broadway is magnificent! and the newly opened rubin museum on the corner of 7th ave and 17th strret has an impressive collection of thangka paintings- mostly tibetan, but there are a few nepali ones as well.

whoever made the nyc/ktm comparisons above does have some good, and certainly very funny, points! but yeah, try to pick up the village voice or time out when you get there. la, enjoy! maybe i'll see you there......

ps- one piece of advice i can give you....unlike usofa, do NOT call it the "metro" as that will instantly let it be know that you are not a new yorker. it's called the sunway in ny. as simple as that....the metro is dc's, the t is boston's, the tube is london's. in nyc, it's just the subway.

jeez, i don't know....that place is ridiculously mahango! i'd do a google search or maybe priceline or something. sorry, can't help you with this one, as i always crash with my friends.....wherever you stay though, the subway won't be too far away. 2 bucks for a ride to any other part of the city! if you're going to be there for a week, you might just want to buy a $20 metrocard or something (funny, it's called the subway, yet they call the pass for it a metrocard!). that will be much easier than buying a $2 card each time. good luck finding a place to stay! the park bench on the corner of central park west and 66th is lovely, although can be kind of cold at this time of year.....

As soon as possible, dive into any subway stop and ask the station manager for a subway map. Use it to plan trips and routes. If you are going to be there for at least 5 days, buy the weekly metro pass for unlimited rides ($22)

Thereon, here?s some suggestions.

What: ?Tengra?, a restaurant operated by enterprising Chinese from Calcutta / Darjeeling, just off the intersection of Broadway and Queens Blvd (on the Grand Ave side).

Why: For those 2 am cravings for chinese cuisine as its done ?back home? (Chinese / American chopsuey, momo darj eshtyle, etc)

How: Ride the G, R or V (going uptown) train from Manhattan and alight at the Grand Ave / Newton stop. Ride on the second car from the front and use the exits immediately ahead, stairs to the South side of Queens Blvd.

Lower Manhattan:

What: Cruise past Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline view from NY harbour Plan on a half day tour of Wall Street, the former WTC site, Battery Park and Statue of Liberty. Approx time: 2-3 hours.

How: Take subway to Chambers street in downtown Manhattan and meander southwards to the famed canyons of Wall street via the former WTC site, ending up at Battery Park.

Plan to arrive at Battery Park (at the southern tip of Manhattan) around 5 pm-ish, as a part of the tail end of the walkabout.

The Staten Island Ferry terminal is to your left as you look towards the statue of liberty from the park. Ferries depart every 30 mins and are free. Board the ferry and go topside (up two levels) and to the right side railings for a clear view of the statue as you sail by. Do not disembark on reaching the other side, unless specifically announced on the PA system. Remain onboard and, on the trip back, head for the deck from where you initially boarded for a great sunset view of the approaching Manhattan skyline. Bundle up well for the chilly winds. Beer and cocoa both available on the ferry caf?.

Additions:
What: Empire State Building, Chinatown and Canal Street.

Why: Rated as one of the most romantic places in the world to kiss a woman (Chinatown for browsing/trinket shopping afterwards)

How: Start your day walking through the crowds/trinkets/ of Chinatown and Canal Street Editions of, well, everything from Gucci to the latest movies in the theatres, those not yet released and audio CD?s (bargaining a must). Dine at any of the restaurants (dim sum, anyone?) on Mulberry Street before heading towards Wall Street. Unless you prefer Mickey D?s.

Upper Manhattan:

Possible Itinerary: The Met, Central Park & Times Square.

What: The famed Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the finest museums with a stunning art collection. Plan on several hours and comfortable walking shoes. End the evening at Times Square amongst the jostling, gawking throngs.

Where: Fifth Ave at 82nd Street, Manhattan, NY. End

Additional itinerary: Natural History Museum at Central Park West at 79th St. The planetarium is arguably the best in the world. The full tour takes several hours.

Others: The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and its store, Broadway Shows (tickets avaiable at Times Square).

For the sweet tooth and other culinary oddities:
Subway to West 4th St, (ride in the first 3 cars), using station exits directly ahead, then head down W. Houston Street to the Italian bakeries: Molto Bene.

In the opp. directions and a few blocks away on Macdougal St is Kati Rolls in Greenwish Village, a unique culinary item from Calcutta.

For lovers of blues and jazz, round the corner is the legendary Blues Alley.

Around Union Square & 14th Street: The Strand bookshop will drive you batty. Madame Tussauds wax museum an iffy proposition.

Hindi movie: Loews in Times Square, sub-basement level of the Virgin music store. AMC 25 theatres cineplex on 42nd right infront of the Port Authority.

Must do: caricature drawn by street artists in from of the AMC theatres and heading towards Times Square.

Do NOT do: Take your significant other on a stroll down from Madison Avenue towards Fifth Avenue and 59th past Tiffany's, Van Cleef et Arpels etc.

I was in NY last week for two days. Go to Central Park. That is a must. There is a 'Gate,' an installation art exhibition, "the art event of the moment", is going on. Do you like opera? Go to see Madame Butterfly. I could not stop crying at the end. DO NOT DRIVE. Park somewhere safe and take the subways. New York is scary. Too big for me in every sense of the word. I enjoy while I am there but it is always a relief to come back home. Read AX's list. Boy, is that a list or a list??

Interesting therad. I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago to see Christo & Jean Claude's Art Exhibit "The Gate". NY was so crowded at that time. All the museums were so crowded and we decided to come back at a later time to visit those. Anyway, noone mentioned Guggenheum Museum (sorry if i missed it). Also, the museum of Modern Art has been moved to Manhattan from Queens and i heard its a must visit. NY is so much fun and a very convinient for tourists. Don't forget to go to Chinatown for Dimsum for brunch. For those who don't know dimsum, its little appetizer portion food rolled around in a cart and you pick whatever you like, its fun with lots of people. Last but not the least go out Clubbing, for more on NYC nightlife visit: www.cooljunkie.com or www.clubplanet.com, there are lots of great parties and they don't ever close. I have been to a party which was going on till 12 pm the next afternoon with packed floor. I love NY.
