It was a good analysis including both Pros AND cons. I am seeing the same situation here in my town (mkw). A relative, DV winner, is going through tremendous pressure. Picking up Garbage and cleaning gas station restroom is not an easy task for an officer level personal back home.

Time will heal it.

Thanks to Thripathi_ji.

"Hundreds of Nepalis from every walk of life have come to the US along with their families through the DV programme in recent years, many of them leaving behind respectable jobs. For some, especially the young, single and healthy Nepalis, who came here with the intention of working or studying hard, it has generally proved to be a good opportunity for income and education. Some of them have even been able to save some money to send back to their families and relatives in Nepal. But for those who have had comfortable lives in Nepal, very soon they realize that to win a lottery is not always being lucky because the life here is not as easy as they dreamed of. [ Tripathee]

A great article indeed! I agree with almost everything she has to say. It is the truth.

If only the author could explain why she is in the states herself, and not in Nepal fixing the ruined cottage, she would definitely do the article more justice.

laubhai,
Why would she need to be in nepal to do justice to her article? If she were there, I bet her voice wouldn't even be heard in that column that she wrote :-)
She is trying to voice her own freedom of speech from her own perspective.

Remember, I am not saying that she would HAVE to be in Nepal to do justice to her article. What I am saying is that if she could EXPLAIN why she is in the US then that would have been better. Inspite of all the hardships, the author herself is in the US. There must be some magic attaraction that America beholds and the readers would love to read that as well.

Frs,

Everything is not perfect. There are some flaws in her writing as well. We, being the readers, should take only what we need. Article makes perfect sense. What do you think?

The article would have got an "A", 95%, if I had to grade it.

well, i came here in 1998 as a student and lived on coffee and cookies for many many many days during my first few years, then i got good job and i enjoyed my new life style.. then i got layed off and struggled again for many days.. now, i am stilll struggling with money, life and career, but i enjoy it and i am trying hard to give the best out of myself. i think i am better off struglling here than in nepal yesterday, today and tomorrow as well... however, i am going back in 2010 (unless of course nepal becomes a republic), with a very good social program, where i won't make money but will live a healthy and happy life... so, chill everyoe.. don't think you find "sun diney kukhura", here.. you have to be the khukhura and make your own "sun ko anda". i mean, what good a life is if there is none...

I agree with Sujanks, and Plymouth . ... U indeed start over here in the USA....but, looking at the brighter side, and how technology is changing everything, I would say smartest and brightest will lead a happy and prosperous life anywhere in this world.....irrespective of where they came from......If we keep on doing what we are doing, and put a little extra each day, who says we have keep working at Dhoti's Gas stations, or drive a cab...or even be a maid....I wish they would give DVs to those who Graduate from Colleges and Universities here in the USA rather than bringing people from all around the world, not knowing what they are getting ! Peace to ya'll..

How about these?
One of my fren's fren, an engineer got DV. All of their family came here. He continued his education upto Masters. Now he has decent job at county.
Another fren w/ wife n kid got DV. At first he was working at Subway. Afterfew months he got job in COnsultant. He is a kind settled.
Well , to get in pressure at first is not odd. It will definitley lead to a better day. And yes, DV winners are not supposed to welcomed with Garaland as they step in to US. No one should consider US as a place where gold grows on tree. But yes if you work hard, you might be able to grow. See w/ positive side.
