Seeing fully grown beard all over my face, people usually confuse me with Muslims. I have no problem with that. But an incident happened today.. A white man asked me if I was a Muslim. With smile, I revealed I was a Hindu. He made funny face and he said " Whatever you are, you don't respect women....". I think he could hardly know the difference between Hindu and Muslim. For him all brown faces looks the same. But I wanted to defend Hindu. So i asked, "how could you prove that? have you done any study before making that statement?" He didn't speak another word. Whether he didn't know anything about Hindu or he didn't want to talk to me anymore, he just walked away. I didn't bother following him either. However, in my opinion, his statement wasn't not completly wrong.
There lots of Muslim rules that proves disrespect to women. But why would anybody who has studied and knows Hindu (Nepalese), think that we don't respect women? Did the man made that his statement ignorantly or he knew about us? Have your say......

Well i don't think we are sexist, but i think cases of drunk husband beating wifes, burning daughter in law alive have made this kinda bad image. Well there are people like those here in America too you know; not long ago somewhere in NY state, a wife had enough of her husband beating her infront of her children and had him arrested.

This is one area where I laud the Maoists. Many reports confirm that the Maoists have furthered womens' cause in rural Nepal. I also hear that from now on 33% of the seats in government job openings will be reserved for women, including seats on the Constitutional Assembly ( I don't know how that will work, does that mean that men will be barred from competing in some constituencies?).

Historically, I have maintained that Hindu culture has been against the sentiment of women, but now I guess some progress is being made (at least it sounds like)

YES WE ARE SEXIST. Up untill a decade ago Nepal did not even let Females own any sort of property. Did not let females into temples during their menstural cycles. Had to touch their husbands feet every morning. Terminated pregnancies when found it would a girl instead of a boy. I can go on and on ....

AND YET YES WE ARE NOT SEXIST ACCORDING TO THESE MORONS ? ha ha ha

I would not go as far as saying that all Nepali men disrespect women, but lets face it.. they dont respect women completely! Of course Nepali people are sexist and the sad part is that even women promote the sexism by accepting the discrimination and at times implementing it in their lives. It is sad to see how women are still supressed. You always hear things like "keti bahyera pani yasto garne?"  Go back home and compare male vs. female education and I am sure you will see a big gap. A lot of women are expected to get married in a certain age and just fulfill their marital responsibilities and not be interested in their own career. Is it not double standards to expect women to give up their dreams whereas expecting men to fulfill theirs? I do believe that this is changing with time, but the change is gradual and minimal. Be it dating, household chores, career, education, sexual expectation, alcohol consumption, behavior.. etc.. just name it, the society has a double standards.

One would think, the Nepali people in the US have changed their views, but sadly that is not the case. Our society is completely sexist, and I dont see it changing in the near future.

P.S: I took a class where my prof. once told us: Sex is something we are born with, we are either male or female.. gender on the other hand is socially constructed. The society creates the norms and expectation for the different sex and makes everything gendered. Nepal, I believe has a huge seggregation of gender. I could not agree with my prof. more!

I heard this one man say and I found it interesting and thought I would share, "Ma ta nurse sanga matrai bihe garchu." That had me thinking. I don't know where the moron is now, nor do I care, but I do sometimes wonder if he indeed got a nurse.

Many not all, Nepali males do indeed discriminate women badly but then again many females discriminate against their own kind too. Ever heard of a "sasu" treating her "buhari" badly? She was treated that way and wants to pass on the shit.

Fathers want "chora" but then again many mothers want a son too. Apeing the husband? Taught to think that way? or pleasing the society? I leave it to you to find out.

Meera, i'm sure the guy got a nurse. Nepal has got plenty of nurses. Esp. these days everyone wants to become a nurse. Not that i got a problem with it, but, i believe you should choose your career based on your likings and not just go with the flow. Many of my relatives even wanted me to do nursing, for , they think a nurse gets a good husband. " america ko keta paucha" they'd told me.What kinda sicked philosophy is that! where do these kinda nonsense enter their minds from! And as for nepalese being sexist, yes, majority(almost all) of them are sexist! Males are sexist 'coz womens allowed/allow them to. So i guess they deserve it.

I didn't come to sajha to undergo a sex transmission. Call me miss BC!
Males didn't allow them? yea right! but you don't accept something unpleasant just 'coz someone doesn't allow you. You should learn to fight for your rights and raise your voice against any injustice done to you .

Madam Aviator,

Thousand Apologies. I mean how are you supposed to fight back with your hands tied behind your back ? If you fought back you are at the mercy of those guthi's, pujaris who controll all aspects of our social life. And if you revolted against them you risk the chance of losing everything(family, social status, property, even your antiim sanskar etc etc) that defines you.

I understand their plight which might have made them succumb to the traditions or watever .I know not all people are alike but when i said that i said it from my point of view. i mean, if i were told to accept some similar sorta life , i would not. Either i would die or kill them all. i believe it's better to die than to live an un-preferable life.So i will still stand on my word- Males are sexist 'coz womens allow them to .

I see your point, and agree with you. Our society was not progressive enough or independent just 2 decades ago to think this way. The Nepali society had put shackles around females from becoming independent(all the girl schools in Nepal are not even 75 yrs old). But I do see your point. Thanks
