**A novice’s attempt on sharing a story – part fiction, part fact, albeit exaggerated, but very close to the heart! If my mere attempt ends up doing injustice to ANYONE or my typos and mediocre vocab irritate the nerve cells, apologies extended in advance!

February, 1996
“burp_aloud@yahoo.com would like to add you to his/her yahoo messenger. Accept / Reject” was what popped up one cold winter night when she logged in to her yahoo messenger. She giggled at the ‘creativity’ of the yahoo id and for some unknown but undeniable reason she clicked ‘Accept’
“Hey Sheila!”
She, “Hey! Who’s this?”
“This is Burpy ”
She, “That I know, but how does Burpy know Sheila?”
“He just knows :D”
She, “???????????????”
………………………………………………..
“Buzz”
“Buzz”
“You there?”
“You backed out already? I heard U were a tough lady”
“OK! If truth is what it takes to keep u from blocking me, we share a common fren & NO, I did not ask her to hook me up with you. I saw you in her pictures and just wondered if we could talk sometimes”
She, “Fair enough”
Burpy, “So, k ma timro sathi banna sakchu?”
She, “:-s”
Burpy, “I don’t know if that’s a yes, but I m sure it’s not a NO”
She, “”
Burpy, “U took a while to reply to my fren’s request there”
She, “I don’t really use these messengers as much. It just so happened that I had to check my emails tonight, but I gtg now”
Burpy, “Will I see U tomorrow again?”
She, “IDK! Bye”
………………………………
Then, she heard her phone ring, caller – Unknown! “Yes??” she answered.  A familiar voice at the other end said, “Hey Babe!” It was her boyfriend! “Hajjjjur”…….
They were thousands of miles apart, yet he never failed to call her every week and every time he called, she still found the same affection he first bestowed to her 6 years ago. She well remembered the tears that trickled down his cheeks, besides his futile attempt to hide them behind his dark ray bans, when she left for the United States almost a year ago. She could still fathom his profound concern about her during their brief talk-times and feel his voice quiver every time they hung up. She always felt that he loved her way more than she actually did! She was blessed to have his angelic figure around her, until that night, which would change her life forever!

Part II

The following night, as she was going through her regular web-browsing, she felt a strong urge to log into yahoo messenger. A strange urge, in fact, which seemed to be bloating her.
“Hey, I was just around to see if someone was online :)”
There was that surprise window again, as soon as she logged in.
Sheila, “Hey , wot’s up?”
Burpy, “Nothing really, I have an exam tomorrow and I was just waiting on you to send your best wishes my way”. There he went again. You couldn’t really tell if he was real, or fake or a mere flirt! But, all it mattered was that he was able to keep her enticed, if not interested YET! It seemed as if he knew exactly when and how to woo her!!
She was fairly new to the exuberant North American world, but had a fairly good idea of a lot of things. She had a trendy taste of the fashion world, an asset to her charming personality that added extra glamour to her confidence and strong academic background. Popularity among peers and a dominating persona attributed to her success and marked her presence. She loathed Mr. I-know-it-alls and you-know-what-I-means. A gentleman with a quick sense of humor and wits was what she expected in a male companion and a decent conversation was all it needed to earn her smile. Sophisticated yet simple! Burpy seemed to know it all! He seemed to have a charm, not of a player but a perfectionist, a different aura that left Sheila smiling at his silly jestures. No, he wasn’t one of those hunks with chiseled abs and sexy muscles, just a guy-next-door look that was ample enough to earn pretty smirks. Nor there was the smallest vibe of compatibility between them. He thought she was cute but cold, who didn’t even bother to ask which school he went to while she thought he was catchy yet creepy.
‘The strangest things happen with the simplest people’. From chatting in yahoo, their creepy fondness grew to talking on the phone and before she knew, she was starting to ignore the UNKNOWN calls! Their conversation ranged from anything to everything, from weather to work, family to friends, from school to sajha :-). They developed the compatibility they never thought of; flirting changed to friendship to feelings and further! Sub-consciously, they both gave up so much of themselves to be what the other end wanted. It did not take them too long to be what they call ‘soul mates’. They found fondness and fidelity in their long distance talks; the 1500 miles distance between the two states that separated them physically helped them strengthen their emotional bond.
That summer at the completion of a successful semester for both of them, he decided to buy her a ticket to attend their common friend’s wedding. She would have attended it anyways, but he always had his ways to make his presence felt! He flew over a day early, just in time to be able to pick her up. As she saw him step out of his car, for the first time in person, she could feel her heart pounding. She was so nervous she could hardly keep track of her facial expressions. A quick peck on the cheek to bring her back from the la la land and he opened the door for her; there she sees a bouquet of fresh smelling flowers on the passenger seat waiting on her, one of her favorites, just in time to woo her again!

I feel like I m one of those who apologize a lot, and that I have to coz I put myself in situations as such! I would here like to beg pardon to you folks who have stopped by to read these deranged pieces of the mini-excerpt from my personal diary. It was indeed a long wait, but here comes the third part and the remaining few follows very shortly. Have a good day :)

Part III

The first meeting changed it all. It was a risky step, yet they garnered guts and got to see the real side of each other. As cutely manipulative he could be, he had an equal extent of gentleman ship. He knew how to treat a lady just right! From opening the door for her to waking up at night to see if she was sleeping all right, he did it all! He was indeed a charmer, an intelligent one; or else she wouldn’t have fallen! She believed intelligence was sexy, hence he was sexy enough. She gave him her world and he made it beautiful! He transformed into her strength and her weakness! She no longer felt like she was devoid of her people in this foreign land. He was her friend, her happiness and her reason to love and live a struggling life. He boggled her mind and travelled deep down her heart. THE meeting added an extra milestone to their intimacy and they both loved it!
Since then, there was no turning point. They hailed from different cultural backgrounds and caste system but that wasn’t enough to stop the spark they saw in each other’s eyes. They had their occasional arguments; well, who doesn’t? It only made their bond stronger! Her knowledge that she wasn’t being fair to her first love who would wait on her until the end of the world wasn’t enough either! Selfish but human! She ‘moved on’, crumbling his entire emotions, trust and devotion into darkness deep!
This side of the world was all sunny and bright. Every trip they made together turned exuberant. They had so much fun, not only as a couple but as the best of friends. They drove together for hours on empty, monotonous highways, yet made it beautiful for each other. Every meeting was bubbly and every parting tearful. It would take them days to get back to their routine environment, without having the other one around. With time, so many things changed in their lives, but they remained unaltered for each other. Their mornings kicked off with his call on his way to work and the night slept off with his good night call. None of the occasional arguments could keep them away from garnering years of love and togetherness, sequences of wooing and being wooed!
And, it was July of 1998, just another time of the year, but something significant! Call it cheesy, call it childish, call it cute but Sheila had her own periods of acute feminine exacerbations, like highly valuing birthdays and anniversaries.  Anything associated with Burpy held special significance in her heart, his birthday topping the list! Their relationship had been growing leaps and bounds over time, one of those relationships that the lesser of friends envied of and the better of friends looked up to. If not physically, they were always there for each other emotionally. Sharing every single bit of details that happened during the day was their routine. Every now and then, they dropped a quick ‘I love You’ note in each others’ inbox or as sms. Burpy wouldn’t miss his occasional chances when he would express his glee of having her in his life; this time she wanted to make it her turn!
She wanted him to have a bigger, better birthday. She planned to woo him with a different birthday gift this year! She spent a lot of time searching for a vendor who would deliver the surprise gift at the right hour of the day. Finding the finest bakery and best delivery in town took priority over her studies and work! She wanted to make him happier. She couldn’t wait to have the gift delivered to him and the call he would make thereafter……….. The phone rang!!!! She could sense her exhilaration that only lasted momentarily. “Hajjjjur???” She broke down into tears when he confronted his disappointment and wrath over the ‘HUGE’ birthday cake which was inconvenient for him to carry home! The eggs broke apart before hatching into the chickens she counted, leaving HER wooed instead!

I appreciate all your inspirational words folks! Thank you for reading :) Here comes the next sequel ...

Part IV

September 1998
Despite the anxiety and stress of being the newest addition to a busy growing business firm, Burpy was doing well at work. At the end of a stressful day, he shared every detail with her – most of which she comprehended, some of them she pretended to ;) She attentively listened and appropriately responded to his spontaneous narration not being tad bit bored. They were the best of friends, best of couples and the best stress-busters for each other.
One fine weekend, he decided to fly down to see her – an unplanned but a pleasure time off of their hectic schedules. This time he found her even better in every aspect from the last time he saw her! Modest compliments and unprecedented compatibility attributed in many ways to make this simple trip the best vacation they both could ask for. They were living every moment of this togetherness to its fullest ~ from visiting unusual spots to taking goofy pictures, to heading to gym together, to being the finest of company for the other half! On the third day of his trip, when they were dining together, Burpy received a call from his mother. Unknown of the fact that her son is vacationing with his girlfriend, she asked him to return home immediately citing an emergency. The reason and severity of the ‘emergency’ unknown, Burpy flew back to his town the very next morning leaving Sheila in a state of mixed emotions.
With him gone at an instance so very unplanned, she was panic stricken with severe anxiety. She wished she could have gone along, but with the fear that her surprise introduction into the family might not prove appropriate at this hour of ‘unknown emergency’ she stayed back, counting on him to take care of the issues that she couldn’t interfere upon. Days of silence followed while she waited on him to get back to her with some kind of news. Not that she didn’t try reaching him herself, but only to find his voicemail in his cell phone and his mom on the land line. She wouldn’t dare revealing herself to his mom, when her son himself couldn’t dare to take the risk! All she could do was wait and wait and wait for stretching hours that seemed to kill her every moment.
Then, her phone finally vibrated one day. Her heart skipped a beat for she could sense an uneasy eeriness, from how the situation was coming along; which multiplied ten folds when she heard his sullen ‘hello’.
“Baba, what’s going on? I’ve been trying to get hold of you every single minute. I send you so many emails. I’ve been scared to death. Are you okay? Is everything okay? I missed you so bad!” She down poured it all!
“I m okay maya! But …..”
Sheila, “But …what..??”
Burpy, “But everything is not okay! I got caught up with a situation that I just couldn’t avoid”
“What kind of situation? What are you trying to say? I am not getting it.”
Burpy, “I m sorry honey, I tried my best. I tried all I could to avoid this situation, but…but……”
“I m having to get married….the day after tomorrow.....”
She did not hear much after that, but could feel her heart sinking, her world darkening, and hopes and dreams crumbling down. All those moments, giggles, and tears shared, milestones achieved and effort put into coming this far, went down the drain that too in a matter of seconds, leaving her awfully wooed, once again!

Part V
October 1999
The wind was swaying very differently for Sheila! Life was never the same like it was or like the way she wanted. She missed being his source of inspiration and carrying that energy over to make it hers’! Every now and then she spent hours thinking what if things had not changed, what if she could make plans of seeing him her forthcoming spring break, what if she could call him at his work amidst his busy schedule just to whisper a soft ‘I miss you’, what if and what not….She was over with the toughest time frame of her life! She was over being devastated, she recuperated in her studies, she no more felt like killing herself, no more drove to far away empty spots where she could scream in his absence, she no more frequented the places the two had visited together to cherish her memories, no more cried herself to sleep or awaken to have realized he did not call her that morning. Yet, she couldn’t get over asking herself if she ever crossed his mind, just like he did everyday!
Change was coming along one at a time. She resumed her diet and her daily life style. She did not know if she was happy but she was definitely not sulking any more. She hadn’t forgotten, but she had learned to smile and laugh once again. The untimely disappearance of one of the most vital person of her life left her torn but she was learning to take one thing at a time, slowly but successfully. But, no matter how hard she tried to avoid, she often found herself dwelling in thoughts and imaginations of the past, the bitter/sweet memories which she had learnt to live with.
One evening, when she was browsing during her regular web-hours, a window popped up – ‘burp_aloud@yahoo.com is online’. Thoughts beyond words started racing, nostalgia over-poured and she clicked at the window to see his display picture. It was changed from the last time she saw him in that blue J-Crew shirt! It was an American Eagle this time and no he wasn’t by himself! This time there was a female figure standing next to him. After almost like a year, she found her pulses pounding again like a bat out of hell and could feel that adrenaline rush. She clicks on the display picture not to look at him or her, but to look at THEM, how close they were standing! That she is his legally married wife, that they spend their days and nights together was not a concern at that point of time for Sheila. She just wanted to see if he was standing close enough to her, within the physical proximity that they could feel each others’ warmth. Upon realizing that he in fact has his arms around her, just like in their last picture together where Burpy stands right next to Sheila; she found her eyes soaked, heart overwhelmed, and histrionic herself wooed, once again!
