I volunteered to talk to a highschool student in regards with his sociology project. He has to meet with a person from a different culture at least 6 times in his semester. Accordingly, I met with him yesterday and he asked a question which made me think a lot. "WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM AN INDIAN?" I replied him but the answer didnot convince me. I have been thinking since yesterday yet couldnot come up with a persuading answer. I know we think we are different from Indian and we dont want to be called an Indian. But how would you differentiate yourself from a bunch of Indian people?
p.s ~ this is not a thread to post any racist comments and trying to persuade the superiority of a certain group over another.

"How would an Amerian differenctiate with the Canadians? The cultures are similar but they are totally different. Thats how it is with us an the indians." This would be my answer.
or
"They are the ones that give horrible tech support and we are the ones who get it"

@abodbalak: I understand what you mean but just saying I was born in Nepal and have Nepali passport was not really convicing to me personally. Some time we just act like we are offended when sb calls us an Indian (applies to me as well).
@maxpayne: Thats exactly what I was thinking. If we go with it, why dont we take it simply when sb labels us as Indian? I dont think any Canadian will ever get mad if you called him an American. Also, we always keep saying (even in sajha) indians are this & that? So are we making fun of our own people? Are we just stubborn to accept the similarity or are we being dumb to hide the obvious?

Race wise the aryan stock of nepal is more purer.....the religion we practise is qutie different from that indians do. We have the medley of hinduism, shamanism, and buddhism. We treat women as goddess and do not touch with our foot (except wife). We are amicable, kind (used to be before maoist' so called people's war), and are not as cunning as indians. Historically, Indians fell under the rule of Greek, romans, turks, hunas, Schythians, slaves, mughals, british, portugese, etc. On the other hand we were born independent and were never ruled by anyone (except now, indians are ruling us indirectly through our charismatic leaders). We do not have unity and are very adaptive and receptive to any differnt culture. Quite broad minded and lack the bigotry (low scale bigotry) indians have.
However,
We are not nationalistic and root oriented as indians are. They love what they are and were. Indians are good at enterpreunership. ...............................................................................................

@busenitz, yeah thats what im saying...it didnt convinve you because thats the truth...we are NOT different from indians...may be a little for the people from inner hills or himalayas..but in general..nope! and im not offended at all when someone labels me as an Indian...infact many times i even accept it if someone thinks im an indian (being half-indian)..and you know why Canadians dont get mad if you call them Americans?? coz they know the importance of having such a great neighbor and being keeping a friendly relation..they know its only beneficial for them...and they know they are actually not different even in other general aspects..so they dont try to isolate themselves...
and about saying this and that about indian...see how quick maxpayne was to make a remark about their tech support...just trying to prove that they are dumb...bro..just for an example...check out Pranav Mistri (an Indian)..

Hello busenitz, What makes chinese and japanese differentiate? I mean they look the same and they even sound the same when speaking english. Even Koreans in that group. Similarly, the whole continent of africa filled with black people, how do you differentiate them? My point is we might look similar, but we are nepali and we have our own culture. It might be hard for a person to tell who we are by looking at us. That is why we ask. WE cannot be ignorat and just assume that this guy looks like indian, i mma call him indian. YOu try calling a japanese "chinese". You know what, try caling a person from taiwan or tibet, chinese. and see the reaction you get. ITs the same calling all the latin people as mexican. or calling the aussies as new zealanders or vice versa. They all get pissed and so as we. So, i think the question is how are we similar to indians? ANd to tell the truth I find myself very less similar to them. (Ma gurung ho with chinky eyes. Look more mongoloid.) I am sure those chinese dont have the problem how they are different from japanese...

Most American kids are stupid but we shouldn't blame them, we should blame the school system because they don't teach them geography. I bet most of these kids only know one country and that's Canada.

i had the same thinking going on lately. I see lots of Nepalis dancing in indian songs, trying to copy salman khan's style and girls wearing salwar kamij and sarees. in usa, yes some Nepalis try to be different than indians because being an indian comes with stigma of having funny accewnt to curry smell and being stingy for some ignorant Americans. but back in Nepal india is major influence. and lots of Nepalis have immigrated from India . we have similar religion and custome. speciallly with internet and bollywood infuence Nepali culture such as gunue cholo, daurasuruwal , dohoree etc are getting less and less popular.. but no matter how close we are with Indians we are still a country and we're not India. and how do you know canadians don't mind when someone just assume them of being American? i think it depends upon person to person.. but i am sure most of them like to be represented as canadians too. but ya, i think we over react when someone assumes us as indian.
I think it comes from the fact that royals trained us to hate india because their power was not secure from the giant country next door and india doesn't seem like a nice neighbour for Nepal like USa is to the Canada either... i care less tho.. fk it.. if someone tries to make fun of me i'll break their face but if someone bit..ches bout me being an indian in the back.. fk it.. i don't care..
i love indian culture, movies, sweets, most things except for their attitude towards some Nepali by some Indians lebelling as gurkhas and khanchis and the fact that there are thousands of Nepali girls still trapped in india forced to be prostitutes. but other than that India is cool , and i love my neighbour..

Timessquare, if that message was soley meant for me, I am sorry to let you know that I don't look a bit Indian. I look totally East-Asian. Get your facts right before you comment, dumbo. I bet you are one of those monkeys who tried to hump the billboards in Times Square when you first got there. I have seen your kind in Times Squares before, bloody idiots look so overwhelmed and out of place like that's the first time they have seen lights and tall buildings. Well, sticking my finger up my a** is better than you licking your own a**. I heard stupid monkeys lick their a**** like stupid American kids. HAHA! Now go watch Hindi movies with your mom. I know you do that.
