It was a good analysis including both Pros AND cons. I am seeing the same situation here in my town (mkw). A relative, DV winner, is going through tremendous pressure. Picking up Garbage and cleaning gas station restroom is not an easy task for an officer level personal back home.

Hi everyone,

It was a great article containing lots of truth but sadly the article "THE DV LOTTERY: A FANTASTIC DREAM OR AN UNEXPECTED NIGHTMARE?" was a one sided opinion.

A good writer like her should have mentioned both good and bad sides of winning the DV lottery rather than being totally negative and criticizing every good that has brought forth by the program. I personally know quite a number of Nepalis who were lucky enough to obtain DV lottery and come to the US. I've seen them work hard initially which later lead them to great jobs and open opportunities. We all have to know that hard work pays off eventually. These Nepalis are now successful. They have a good career, most own their own house even though they have to pay mortgage (which means eventually the house is going to be theirs) and most of all they have a comfortable life. If we are all talking about a successful life, then what percentage of people in this earth are successful. I'm sure the rate of people with good jobs and life is less than the unfortunate once. So, life was never a comfortable journey and never will be. At least for those who won the DV lottery, they have a chance to work hard and earn a successful living. What would they have back home in Nepal? A life where they would have been locked inside the four borders of Nepal with no advancement in life and no future to look forward to. There is a good life only for the aristocrats and i still say their life is no better than the once who are from the middle class family here.

Rest said, I’m a proud Nepalis-American and I’ll never forget my roots. I’m successful on my own grounds and I’d never regret or condemn my luck of getting a second chance in life to make a good living in this country. I’ve learned values, morals and culture from my original country Nepal and I’m thankful to the land for that and never will I forget that beautiful land. Yet, when I compare Nepal and USA I’m one hundred percent sure that I’m so much better here in this country than would have been in Nepal. My moto in life is always “work hard and you will get the benefits of it sooner or later”.

My question to all those people who say that going to states we end up working in gas station, or some dhoti's restaurant or some maid job... what the hell is wrong with that... why don't we all accept the fact that, it's just a job... if you don't like it then... what is it you wanna do... everyone loves to be rich and happy... not all can be one.. okay... damn.. people... the best job i've ever done is for a gas station... i had no worries of any kind at all.. woke up at 8 went to work came back at 6.. smoked pot.. watched sports.. f*ck and sleep.. smoked again .. trash talk with people... etc etc now i do something else that pays well.. but i have more stress... it's like... thats okay.. the more success you want.. the more hard work you have to do... even if it is working 16 hrs a day... believe me.. i used to work from 8 in the mornign till 12 sometime 2 at night... eventually i quit one because i couldn't handle it... it's like what you want is what you get but it's about how much you want it...

There are several other motives why Nepalis work in Gas Stations......Since you worked there, you know as well as I do...(from experience)....After a while, it was brutal, and I have a different career now.......Gas Stations has been the pot of Gold for so many......If others don't know what I mean, don't even bother...you are better off ! I agree with every one here. It’s a human nature to get carried away and more over the word "bidesh" is soooooooo tempting if you are in Nepal.
When I was doing ISC every one talked about "bidesh" and I use to dream...I will be on my own, work and have own money and no one to tell me what to do? I headed for "bidesh" after few days in foreign land I finally realize dreams are only dreams. Work and study was not an easy job plus the student visa and the limitations with the status. After struggling and working like a dog I got my degree. I headed back to my motherland.
I had a best job and then I got married. I really enjoyed working and travelling around the country. One day I just thought I wanna go "bidesh". Now I am in the UK with my family and have been living here for more than 4 years, also I have a very good job, WHY I am thinking of moving to US or Australia?

We humans are creative, we want to explore, we want to learn and we all take chances…..
