A little over a month I posted this thread: http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=32015

Back then, I thought this was some isolated incidents that would go away on its own. Unfortunately, instead of going away, it's becoming more of a common theme in the sajha kurakani.

An individual can be bad. An individual can do condemnable acts. But we cannot condemn the whole group because of the acts of one or few people of the same group. As we look at history of our country, groups of people have been discriminated against. Kamis, sarkis and many other such castes have been segregated to never be able to live up to their potentials. In this day and age everyone needs to have the opportunity to shine at what he/she is good at. I think it is conceited and wrong for anyone to think that a certain caste should not be able to do certain things.

Most of us who visit this site are educated, yet, we take advantage of the anonimity provided by the internet to thrash other groups. Other groups which consist of individuals. Individuals who do not fit the stereotypes.

As we look back at the history of Nepal. We have always been divided into separate castes. It has always been in the rulers best interest to divide and rule. Even the British used the 'divide and rule' policy to rule over India. We have just recently earned 'democracy' (which is still in it's conception stage), and it's a perfect time for us to do away with the caste system that divides us. We, are individuals firstly, and then we are Nepalis. It's a perfect time to move on to the 21st century and do away with a tradition that tries to determine your fate according to your birth. We should judge a person by his/her individual achievements rather than branding someone according to his/her birth family.

I'm a little tired after coming back from the ANA today so please accept my apologies if I have not been very coherent. The main thing I want to say is that caste discrimination is not going to go away on it's own. We cannot simply ignore it and say that it's part of life. We have to do something about it, and we can all start by NOT practicing this in sajha. Please join me in declaring sajha a site where we do not discriminate on the basis of castes. This will be enforced. As responsible members, I hope you will help by notifying admin@sajha.com if and when these kinds of topics rear their ugly heads.

More on the ANA and more photos coming soon...

I am really glad, there are people like san.
But, even in these positive posts we have been pointing as this or that group. Everyone should perceive other as belonging to the same group.
You are either an individual or belong to a single group.

I respect and support what SAN did. Racism, casticsm, whatever sm is bad, i agree. But if we do not talk about it and avoid talking about it like a plague but practice and/or ignore the fact that it runs in daily life of Nepal, then how in the world are we going to end this ill practice?
No one can deny that Nepal has this problem. Also,it is not going to go over night by not talking about it. We should all talk about this in a mature way, in an educated way and pitch in to completely wipe it out of our new age Nepal, where bS things like this should not have any value.
But sadly, no one wants to talk about these things. As soon as you start talking about the real problem, you get bashed, they start throwing nasty at your and your parents, get dirty and start a fight. It is sad that even the educated people do not have patience. They have gotten big degrees not did not become humble and wise enough to realize the problem and to move on to fix it.
I say, let us talk more , but let us respect each other and talk on how to eradicate such nasty things from our society.

Dyamm,

I am not saying that Caste Discrimination is going to go away by not allowing this topic. The fact is that we cannot have a respectful caste related discussion in an internet forum where everyone is anonymous. We should have face to face discussions regarding caste related issues whereby one is bound by social etiquettes of decency. Maybe a topic for next ANA discussions perhaps.

Say no to caste discrimination not only in sajha but in Nepal as whole. We can perhaps use this thread to discuss how we can work collectively in trying to eradicate the caste discrimination in Nepal. There might be some users in sajha having contacts in the government. Maybe they can ask them to do some small things that will positively affect the lives of so many Nepalis who are now divited by the invisible barricade of the caste system.

Please allow me some leverage to input my point of view.

1) it's perfectly fine to dicuss the caste discrimination that has been paralyzing our society for centuries.

2) matter of fact, it's good to have healthy debates which seamlessly aim at seeking solutions.

3) i would say, it's fine even if we discuss the issues here in sajha itself, as sajha is sajha-- a platform to voice one's opinion, i believe.

what's NOT fine is:

1) soon as this issue comes in sajha, 10 out of 10 times, it would head towards bashing each other, name calling, foul languages which only stir more hatred instead of coming to any sort of concrete solution (consensus).

2) people are full of racial prejudices, they don't want a healthy debate. they want to fight and exhibit their "dadagiri" behind their concealed identities. some of them do it for fun, and others for purpose.

3) wise people ignore those posts. less wiser ones reply. not so wise ones resort to cheezy replies, pictures and so on and instigate more hatred.

4) amidst this level of hatred and prejudice, having a thoughtful debate is out of question, let alone reaching to consensus.

5) freedom of speech should be respected. however, that does not mean you have a right to insult the sentiments of other people and/or communities. sajha admin has full right to act against those ill-motives. it's NOT dictatorship as some were implying in other threads.

6) the best way to avoid caste discrimination is not by discussion, but by changing us as an individual, getting over our racial prejudice. we are social animals. being a part of the society, we hold certain responsibilities. if we don't care about it, nothing's gonna happen. let's do a self-analysis and debate with ourselves. leave sajha alone.

LooTe

This is NOT BAD TOPIC “Racial Discrimination” but bad if you do not understand about it.

Why?

In Nepal, there are 61 race people where.... 98% Bahuns and Chettris are currently employ in Government Offices, they only get opportunities in foreign study scholarship, and they only get opportunity in Nepali political parties.

But other Nepali 59 tribes and native indigenous Nepalese never ever get luck in Government employments, study scholarship and political participation. They socially and politically suppressed by Bahuns and Chettris. This racial discrimination problem is ruin democracy, law, order and civil rights in deep down thru the root of Bahunism and racial discrimination of Nepal.

The root key reason of racial discrimination of Nepal is cause makes Nepal in 5th the poorest country in the world and it never ever progress in development since 6 decades of democracy.

These issues must bring on the round table in the public places, public forum, public debates, universities, parliaments, political main streams, Nepali Medias and in Nepalese communities. Therefore, If we really want to understand about Nepalese problems and find out our solution.

Those only do or support by wise people, not stupid and illiterate people. Because stupid and illiterate people do not care and do not know what is going on.

I fully agree with you Everything. The major Nepalese medias are also dominated by Bahuns and therefore at a time when everyone's voices need to be heard, the chatter that are going on in different non-bahun societies are completely muted. And San in the name of "discrimination" you too want to stop threads which you have conveniently labeled racist in a forum like Sajha?

Yes, where is your belief in freedom of Speech?

It's perfectly fine to discuss these topics as long as the discussion does not degenerate into name calling and foul language.

Haude ko bhai, it's ironic that you ask me about my belief in freedom of speech in sajha :)

San I say fine with name calling and foul language as long as it is not forced on anyone. Any reader in Sajha has a choice to read or to ignore it. By removing it you are making that decision for others. But having said that...you run this site and so you can do whatever pleases you. You are the King!

Haude I respect your opinion and I have no problems with you feeling that it's fine that way. I personally don't have any problems either. But when it comes to running a public site where any Nepali should feel welcome at any time, I do not think postings full of hatred and foul language are attractive. You are free to disagree after all that's the beauty of sajha where we can all agree to disagree or we can all agree to agree as long as we agree or disagree respectful of each other without using foul or derogatory language which shows disrespect towards other individuals.

San,

Simply thanking you would be puerile, you deserve more than that. For a webmaster who created, sustained and is now surviving the odds of the outcome, nothing else could take more toll on an emotional front.

My advent of sajha was during its heydays, where arguments were validated, opinions were respected and scorns were laughed off. We had our own shares of joy and contempt but it all ended within a thread. Sitara wrote fabulously, czar added more condiments, nepe argued on solid grounds and shirish went on a sher rampage. I learnt more in sajha regarding multifarious aspect of life than in any of my academic career. I should thank you the most and all other elite writers of sajha in this regard.

Lately, I shy away from sajha as much as possible. Keeping a safe distance from supposedly constructive criticism which only comes as an invective results only in abhoring this once an extraordinary website. I had vowed not to write anymore.

But your post revitalized my vigor in participating once again. Hopefully this inning lasts forever.

I do not reply much but I always had a great appreciation to what you have done in buidling this website.

Thanks,
John
