Best things in life are FREE. A mother's love. A lover's embrace. Clean, crisp air in the Annapurna region. And Sajha.com That is why, as you do for your public radio stations, community museums, public libraries, and other non-profit entities that add to the quality of your life, why not take a moment to add Sajha to your "must give presents to in this festive season this year" list? Give what you think is reasonable. Give from the heart. Give on your own -- any amount will do, yes, any amount. Give liberally. Give for the continuous upkeep and betterment of Sajha's IT-related infrastruture. Give to get enjoyment. Give as a member of this community. Give. Here's a message from the Web Master -- San -- that I think is worth amplifying: **** "Where else do you find FREE Nepal related entertainment and information like in sajha? As you can imagine, there are costs associated with maintaining a site as big as this. Be it in bringing state of the art chat servers or be it in granting access to high speed internet connection with the most upto date servers to keep your sajha experience fast, fun and continuous, sajha has always been there 24/7. I have been informed that because of steep bandwidth consumption, the cost of hosting sajha is going to be higher than before. Would you like to make a little contribution to show your support for the site and to ensure that the site is able to continue its services to provide you with a sajha cyber chautari where you can discuss, learn and enjoy at any time? If you spend a lot of time in sajha, and if sajha has provided you entertainment and valuable information, then now is the time to show your support to sajha. - http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/openthread3.cfm **************** Best things in life are free. Your generosity will help make Sajha free for you, your friends and thousands more Nepalis who have yet to discover it in months and years ahead. Thank you. oohi "no, I am just a contributor like you" ashu

Lalpari, I have been quietly following your reactions to some of my posts for the past several days here. In this PUBLIC FORUM it's obvious that -- for reasons known best only to you and you alone -- you do NOT like me, and that you feel an exaggerated need to attack me (now) by comparing me to some of GWB's workers . . . without, of course, having the dignity to attack my ideas. Look, it's one thing to needle me for being over-enthusiastic about this whole thing (a charge I will fully accept , for I firmly believe that nothing ever gets done anywhere without lots and lots of energy, enthusiasm and persistence), but, let's face it,m it's really stupid to try to paint me as some spin-master for no reason. Then again, yours is NOT the first stupid attack I have sustained on Sajha. Yours will NOT be the last. And that's the way these things are: I can shrug these off. BUT after seeing how you have tried, in an effort to be some Ms. Moral Tightass, to put San on the same boat as Pushkar Shah, I can only shake my head and ask: How low can you go? Do you trust nobody? Do you have faith in no one? Is everyone here is out to lie, hide, cheat, steal and spin? I mean, come on! Lalpari, intellectual skepticism is admirable, but your kind of rather jaundiced worldview, wrapped in some nose-p;icking morality, is something we need LESS of on Sajha, in this FREE and OPEN and TRUST-BASED community of Nepalis worldwide. ******* Other than that, everyone else, THANK YOU for your willing and voluntary donations to Sajha. If you have not given yet and would like to give, please do so in these happy, festive and holidaying times. IT's NOT the amount, it's your thought to help out, that's waht counts more. oohi ashu

Shiv, Thank you for your postiing, For the sake of kura-kani, let me share these thoughts. Calling you repeatedly on the phone is pestering. Flooding your inbox with "give" emails is pestering. Accosting you on the street to make you give money is pestering. BUT Reminders on a PUBLIC FORUM, which people are free to ignore, do not add up to pestering. For this kura-kani, I'd define pestering rather differently. ******* That said, on a DIGRESSIONARY note, maybe we have all these problems in Nepal because no one pesters anyone else over anything. Everyone thinks they are "so above" pestering. For instance, 13 Tamangs got killed in Nagarkot recently. Who is being single-mindedly PESTERED to seek justice for their deaths? No one. Who is doing the single-minded pestering? No one. A week from now, mark my words, those poor Tamangs will ALL be forgotten, and things will have moved just fine on in KTM. Utterly sad, but true. This was the trend in Nepal in the past; this will be the trend in future UNLESS we develop many single-minded Pesters-In-Chief who will put their lives in harm's way and risk popularity to pesteringly find the answers to the question as to why 13 totally innocent villagers had to die because some idiot was running amok near an army barrack. In other words, who in the army hierarchy is going to be suspended, fired and tried over the deaths of 13 poor Nepalis? Sadly, and this may be a jump in logic here, by worrying about the pesterings over small "public" things, we fail to build up "pestering potential" for larger "public" things. ******** oohi ashu

Ashu, You are welcome. Pestering is eternal since the evolution of mankind, I have no doubt. I am deeply saddened by the Nagarkot incident and I DO grieve for the family of the departed ones and feel sorry for others who are living under such circumstances. However sad incident this may be they will all be forgotten, most of them who were killed are already forgotten. Life moves on. This is the sad reality of the human nature. We have short memory, very short. Let me get back to the issue now, I am venturing off.. Here is the definition of pestering "causing irritation or annoyance" (from dictionary.com) and it just did that for me. Please do not take me wrong I appreciate your efforts, your willingness to help Sajha and your coming forward asking for money. We got your point but I am sorry, asking for it again, and again got to me. -Shiv

Shiv, Thank you for your post. I understand what you are saying. My concern is that if we use up our "annoyance quota" over small, small things all the time such as expressing annoyance/irritation even at harmless, if boringly repeated, general-interest PUBLIC (and not private) requests (which we can always safely ignore), THEN, by the time big things (such as Nagarkot killings) come along, we are bound to suffer from a collective "irritation deficit" to do anything concrete. I'd reserve my limited energy on relatively bigger life-and-matter matters things such as Nagarkot killings over which we should get really pissed off, while letting small harmless annoyances such as requests for gifts slide off the 'tolerance' meter. Tetti ho. Re: Nagarkot killings, in Nepal, whenever a murder of a Tamang by a Thapa is being investigated by a Shah to address the protest of a Koirala, only farces result. It does not have to be that way, but it just is. oohi ashu \

Why not leave it to people to decide on their own whether they want to give to sajha or not. I don't see a point in arguing endlessly about this. Let them decide on their own. I hope people who know the importance of sajha to them will not let this opportunity to help it go away in vain. BTW, there is a main update thread from the admin already at the top of the kurakani section. People who are interested can visit it to make some contribution.

This thread signifies what is really wrong with our society…. We want democracy but we don’t want check and balances. “Why should the rule apply to me, I am honest... it’s he who is dishonest so the rule should apply to him.” This sort of attitude must change before we see any real changes in Nepal. Ashu, let me assure you that I am in no way doubting San’s honesty and integrity. I met him in the mid-nineties in Minnesota and I have friends who are close friends to him. I am certain that he is a person of great integrity, honesty, and poise – of this I have no doubt. He is out there to do good for our community and we should all be proud of him and his work. With that said, let me point out to you my points since you have chosen to completely miss or ignore them. So here are the clarifications: 1) Whenever a contribution is requested from general public, the system should be accountable and transparent – it doesn’t matter whether you donate 10 cents or 10000 dollars. 2) My mention of Pushkar was not meant to demean San or the site in anyway but to stress that rule of accountability and transparency should apply the same way to both HONEST individuals like San and the shady characters like Pushkar. Our attitudes that the rules should apply to everyone else but not to me is pitiful. That’s what democracy is all about. All men are created equal … isn’t that the prime theme of US constitution – supposedly the greatest democracy in the world? 3) I do commend you for pushing this issue and ask Sajhaites to contribute to Sajha however don’t try to scare people away from asking hard questions by attacking them personally – that would be undemocratic. Now let me address your personal comments to me. I have made three calculated “moves” so to speak: 1) I stated at the outset that you are “pandering” 2) That you are putting your own spin on things similar to what GWB’s staff do. 3) I mimicked you by using QUOTE UNQUTE … 4) I pointed out that you are not calling spade a spade but actually calling spade a “manual ferrous-wooden convex excavator” which you stated that you never do. Aside from comparing your ideas and methods of persuasions to methods and techniques used by American Righties, I have not personally attacked you in any way. On the other hand you go into an angry emotional attack of me for the apparent reason that you can not defend your points of views in more civil manner which you refer to as “nose-picking morality” and “morally tightass.” I am ok with that. I am not offended. In a public forum, it happens. People make assumptions about you and go into hypocritical attacks because they did not get their tea in bed that morning or something!! After reading your last posting addressed to me I went and talked to a few of my friends who frequent Sajha. I asked them about you. I wanted to know more about this individual who thinks he is taking a high ground by vehemently calling me names, making assumptions about me, and attacking me. Who is he? Well I found out. You stated that I attacked you and you put it this way:”In this PUBLIC FORUM it's obvious that -- for reasons known best only to you and you alone -- you do NOT like me, and that you feel an exaggerated need to attack me (now) by comparing me to some of GWB's workers . . . without, of course, having the dignity to attack my ideas.” First of all I want to say that I did not know you and I don’t waste my emotions like “likes” and “dislikes” on people I don’t know about. So your paranoia that I did not like you is a fallacy and misguided. Second, you felt the need to think of yourself as a victim (poor Ashu)… I am being attacked even when you weren’t. What is that all about? Only you can answer that – and I don’t really care to know the answer. Finally you stated that I attacked you without having “the dignity to attack” your ideas. Excuse me? Go back and read your own postings and do some self examination and decide who lacks dignity and goes into personal attacks without cause. Well I know more about you now so let me be clear on this attack issue. At the time I couldn’t have attacked you because I did not know that you were spoiled academic elitist who went to Harvard (my buddies did not know whether you graduated or not), left US, and went to back to Nepal where he is totally frustrated that he cannot practice what he learned in the US. You want proper democratic RULES in place but you do not want the rules to apply to you or your friends because you consider yourself and your friends TRUSTWORTHY and beyond doubts – god forbid anyone should question your clan. You attack furiously if your ideas and methods are ever questioned, I am sorry to say just like the Righties in the US. I spend couple of hours last night doing some reading; I went to NepaliTimes and read some of the stuff that you have been writing … I will admit they are commendable and your heart is in good place but PLEASE keep an open mind to other people’s ideas and thoughts even if they don’t match yours. Don’t attack!!! Finally on a lighter note I have to say you calling me a “Ms. Moral Tightass” is funniest of all the assumptions. You fell into your own "stereotypye trap" because my real name is Lal Prasad Risal thus my nick LalPaRi!! Anyway stay well … keep open mind!!

Lalpari et al, In a democracy, conversations NEVER end, and can get sometimes a bit heated. That's the nature of OPEN democracy where each voice has an EQUAL chance of being heard and commented on. [Most Nepalis want democracy but without the attandant chaos, and there is NO such thing as a chaos-free democracy in an OPEN society such as this one of Sajha. The sooner we learn to accept chaos and find coherence, the stronger communities such as this one will be.] I say that, assuming, of course, that we are all democrats here, with a small d. **** Other than that, THANK YOU for your contributions (postings and money). Others, please do think about contributing what you can. oohi "Everybody knows what Coke is: why then Coca Cola keeps on advertising its drink?" ashu

Lalpari, I use my own name here. I have ALWAYS used my own name here, and have always signed my postings with "oohi ashu" signature. I do that because I really believe in transparency and in taking FULL public responsibilities for all my publicly expressed thoughts -- good thoughts and even for mistakes. But everything has its own risk. I know that my using own, real name ALSO makes an easy target for some people out there. But I am NOT -- let me tell you this looking straight into your eyes -- worried about what some of those people out there say against me. I know and they know that they will NEVER, NEVER and NEVER have the courage to say the same negative things about me in a public forum anywhere using their real names. EVER. That's because it'll be so easy for them to laughed off for being provably WRONG, WRONG and WRONG about me ON EVERY COUNT. If I did not have 200 per cent condidence about this, believe me, I would not be what I am today. So, yes, please go ahead and do reaseach about me. But ask me first so that I can supply you ALL the verifiably true info without charity or malice. ***** Now than that, do NOT give to oohi ashu; give, instead, to Sajha.com -- where threads about gifts give away to Lalpari's entertainingly FALSE rants. And that's just another day in the life of Sajha. oohi ashu

Lobhee Lal Prasad I have given to many charities and non-charities alike for the spirit of giving because I want to or because I believe in their cause. I don't care to be bothered by red cross's financial statements. If I give to some needy person for his treatment, I don't care to see his financial transparency. It is like a contribution box at some function. If you want to give you give. If not you walk right past, without taking the moral high ground about how contribution boxes need to be transparent, and how you need to know how your stingy dollar gets spent. Nuff said.
