Sanity returns. Is oscar only reserved to the US movies simply because foreign films can't compete in terms of the budget.
How many of you actually have seen Hurt Locker.
I don't think many. Yeah AVATAR may be great film in terms of its budget, its colossus in terms of animation and new technology. But in terms of stories it isnt as strong.
Yesss ... without any exception AVATAR is a great movie. Much more efforts have been put on new technologies.
The thing is the drama. AVATAR does contain emotions and drama but not that ki "IS DIL KO HILA DE"..... Obviously, as I said, AVATAR's animation part ne DIL KO HILAYA.... So, it's clear that animation is not everything to complete a movie.
Avatar faliure to win oscar is infact good news for nepal. Hopefully someday nepal can also get an oscar for the best movie. We don't need to be strong financially.
Back to back (Slumdog last year), a low budget movie has beaten the titans.
Yes, much of it has to do with the story line, with Avatar pretty much being a plain story (AKA Pocahontas) mixed with some straight war and “earth” message at the end. But it also had to do with how Oscar chooses the winner this time; if there is a panel who didn’t like Avatar, and there are plenty right wingers who didn’t like it, then your chances of winning is very very slim; meanwhile movie like Hurt Locker would be no 1 or no 2 in most of the panel’s radar.
I just think the highest grossing movie of ALL FREAKING TIME deserved a better night, but can’t complain much because of the story treatment.
hurt locker is so over rated...was not rooting for avatar either...a serious man should have won. that was a trippy movie. how many of you like David lynch's movies?? or the Coen Brother's movies??
There are over 100 countries , making movies in different langauges. We know AVATAR because it is in English. Thats why an english movie always has an advantage of highest earning over the world.
But that does not necessarily means it deserves an oscar. Oscar is I think chosen by over 300 judges. So i believe the chances of being baisness is pretty minimum.
@ no_queiro. It is nice to know that 300 Judges have worked for the reasonable outcome, WHEREAS 3 Supreme Court Judges can decide the faith of 300 million people.
To impeach Academy awards like few did above, you perhaps need to understand the history behind how selections are made. Although having said that, I have my own set of frustrations when Slumdog Millionaire won the best movie last year, it was an over the top melodrama which was readily embraced by American public, and then the whole world. I doubt if it would have received similar recognition had it been directed by Deepa Mehta.
At times oscar awards seem delusional. I can list few more examples where Penelope Cruz defeated a significantly better actress in Amy Adams and Denzel Washington (although a great actor he is, he certainly did not have an edge over Russel Crowe that year) over Russel Crowe.
Avatar was a mega-buck, mind boggling saga which had a predictable finale. If there is anything laudable in that movie, it is the special effect. Who needs a camera when softwares invent Pandora? Therefore I thought choosing 'The Hurt Locker' was justified. But then again, I thought Maggie Gyllenhal excelled over Monique, but that might just be a personal thought.
Kathryn Bigelow without any doubt deserved the best direction award, but how about the best picture and the best editing award? Felt like the decisions are overshadowed by the judges' mercy towards the female director! We all are human beings.
It can also be seen as unwillingness to award the director who already got enough of his share for Titanic. Just my thoughts!
I cannot believe u guys loosing ur sleep over this. No matter what you say and think, Academy award is NOT the finest out there. It has and always will be commercial and political. There are many Indie awards that are producing better results over choosing real talents and authentic movies, not over hyped and overly bloated budget movies. To name few, Sundance, Triveca and many others. Come on, Jamie Fox got an award. For what, just being black....Don Cheda (Hotel Rwanda) deserved it more then Jamie Fox that year.Even these people can get the awards as long as it is a controversial subject -Dolph Lundern, Van Damme, Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris. Surprisingly Leonardo DeCaprio has never won one and he gets nominated almost every other year. Just getting Academy award does not mean instant success, just ask Cuba Gooding Jr. That dude has not made a single good movies for decades now. The same fate might happen to Forest Whittaker and Denzel. Real movie conesseur in the US do not watch Academy Award to pick their choices. Besides few MTV kids who seriously take those awards, I'm surprised our own Nepalis fellas getting pumped up over it. But again, we probably watch Miss America every year, which in one of the least watched award show in the US, rumored to be dropped from live show because of the poor ratings. Real Americans do not care about Miss America, but Victoria Secret....hell yea.
I was wishing for Hurt Locker to win. This movie has all thing we need to know about Iraq war. there is love, hatred , patriotism and all thing need to be in a movie.
Avatar is also a nice movie but its all fake and based on dream but Hurt Locker is real happening to America and Iraq !
Those who thinks Oscar is lie or somthing else keep in ur mind Oscar is not Nepal Chalachitra board where officers choose best film for thousand rupee
From Trump “I will revoke TPS, and deport them back to their country.”
