All right folks I am in a bit confused state right now. My F1 visa has expired and I want to renew it. For this purpose I am not sure if Canada or Mexico is the right place to renew my Visa. Any facts about this would be highly appreciated.
I am still in school and I have a valid passport.I just do not want to go back to Nepal just to reapply for a new Visa.
Thanks.

Are your I-20 and I-94 documents valid? That's all that matters as far as your legality in the US.
But if you really need to get your visa renewed, it shouldn't be hard to get another one
in Mexico or Canada. My personal preference would be Canada just because US-Mexico border
is not exactly a vacation destination. As a matter of fact, you can setup the consular appointment online for the embassy in Canada.

Hello Sathi, F1 visa never expires as long as you are in this country in your status. Thatz the reason you can see D/S- durations of status in your I-94. Which means, the visa is valid as long as you fulfill your status, here go to school full time. The only time you will need a new visa is if you have to reenter this country. So the best solution for you is if you are not planning to go back home any time soon. Dont even worry about going to Canada or Mexico.

however Im planning to go to nepal in May, and I want to apply for visa in nepal, BUT dont want go go through the process again.

do you guys suggest any other option like going to mexico border? i live very close to mexico border. If so, do i need to make the financial statements again?

also is it true that the immigration checks our social security on our way back?

Thank you guys for sharing your knowledge about this topic. Like Mamta stated I don't want to go through the same process again. I am just trying to find some way to reenter if  I go out of US in near future. Say to Europe.

if for reasons u could not get the visa renewed at the Canadian or Mexican border, then there is a risk that u will be asked to travel all the way to Nepal to get it renewed for US entry. Are u willling to take this risk?

If you go to Mexico or Canada and do not get a new F-1 visa, then you always have the option to travel back to the US with your expired F-1 visa and your current valid I-20 and valid passport. However, you have to be back to the US within 30 days and cannot travel to a third country.

Getting new visas through US Consulates in Mexico and Canada is far easier than the US Embassy in KTM. For accurate and current information on this, it is better to consult your international student advisor and visit the USCIS website. I am not sure, but I believe, that the process to get the F1 is the same as you went through in Kathmandu no matter from where you apply.

Hope this helps. Good Luck to all of you who's considering this!

I know that some of the guys are trying to offer some helpful comments but what I find hilarious is the fact that instead of adding something new, everyone's repeating the same facts in a reworded manner. Everybody knows that as long as someone goes to school, full time, s/he is on a legal status ni. Is the orginitor asking the same question? No! What he wants to know is how to get his visa renewed because he's worried about the same ridiculous processes that we all we through back home when we applied for Visa! Mamta asked the same thing. So it'd be really nice if someone who's renewed the visa from Canada/Mexico gave some advices or shared their experiences instead of people sharing what everybody already knows.

i think everyone has shared different things, even though bits and pieces of informaton, which I am sure is pretty helpful to people wanting the information. I do not see what Quagmire's point is when s/he is saying that people pour down new info; it's clearly in one of the posts above to check with the International Student Advisor and the USCIS website as rules and regulations often change and so do requirement. So, to get an accurate and complete guidance on the matter interested people should talk to their International Advisor (is an F-1 student), talk to company attorney or any immigration attorney (if on H1B) and go through the USCIS web page.

I am sorry guys I didn't mean to create any confrontation with any folks around here but as Quagmire stated all I wanted to know is to renew it without having to go through the ridiculously long precess as we did in Nepal. But bits and pieces helped me a lot and I am sure it helped a lot of us who are in the same page.Still if anyone who has experience going through this process would like to share his/her experience would be highly appreciated.

Thank you all for your response.
