Long distance relationship is a double edged sword  you are doomed if you do and you are doomed if you don't.

First it depends on what you mean by long lasting? Two months, a year, 2 yrs, or 5?

I have been in one for three years! You must be going 'Goddamm, is he for real?'
Yes, ultimately it depends on your compatibility. It is a lot harder I admit but long-distance doesn't mean you never see the person. You have to be able to give time to each other and spend time together whenever you can.

Communication is a huge deal as it is easy to get really busy and get engrossed in your own life. Well, I will stop preaching now. But back to the question. I have seen long distance relationships last among my friends and it is certainly possible to make it work. Who knows, at some point long-distance might turn into short-distance.

I totally agree with Fortunefaded. when we far from our loveones. We need some time to stable in new environment. As you say its depends upon our partner too and also communication. I saw lots of my friend end their longdistance relation in shrot period of time...is it beacause of unsecurity or they dont have trust eachother..than why they start such relations..

i agree with fortune faded...

i have a long distance relationship with a girl in nepal and its been going on since 2 and a half years.. the only problem in long distance relationship is after a while you dont trust each other and you start making up different stories in your head but you must try to get over it.. najikai hudai ma pani keti le dhoka nadela bhanera bhanna sakinna so its the same thing yaar.. i dont really believe long distance relationships dont last and communication is very important.. well i am going to meet her this february and hope to bring her back here in US with me...

just know something trust binds the hearts of two lovers like a string. once you dont trust and this string is broken then there is no relationship at all
