Hello people,

Am I the only one? My Gosh, I have such a huge presentation fear. I lose my sleep, and  my heart beats faster than anything in this world. I wonder, Why I am like this. IS there anybody, who fits in my shoe? I need advise. I want to go infront of people and say what I want to. But I cannot.. I make a joke out of me. Can I hear some comments on this please. I am waiting for people to boost my confidence.

Hi Curl,

This is not only you. Even a very confident man also has such kind of fear. Just relax and prepare your subject and make a note about main points of your presentation. There is nothing to worry about.

Good Luck..........

Definitely everybody fears. But Curl, in one book I studied that whenever you go for presentation just try to assume that there is nobody listening to you, just consider the heads of the people as a cabbage and assume like you are presenting to the cabbage heads. Try this way if it works. LOL!!

Good Luck!!

Yea Curl i agree with former frens comment. I use to have and still have same problem up to some extent. when i first prepare for my presentation i almost ruin whole thing because of fear. Then i took speech class...called  Public Speaking in which all you do is go to class talk infront and listen to others, That class really helped me a lot but still my leg shakes when i stand in front and my ear turns red and my tounge slips often but i think i am little bit more confident than before so yea....practice would be a major way to improve confident.

Best of Luck

We all have the same problem, unless you were associated in school politics and used to deliver speeches.

We inherit it as a part of our educational system.  We just take notes and are a good listener through out the class. Very few times I had raised hand to ask question.

As suggested take public speaking class. That's why they say money talks bullsh**t works.

i had same problems too. but i've managed little bit to overcome it. try taking caffein rich stuffs before your speech like chocolate and coffee. that's helps to lower your heart-beat. another problem of mine used to b sweating a lot from forehead and palms. for that try taking deep breath after every two or three sentences. short-breathings cause u to panic and sweat. go slow rather than explaining too fast. don' hurry.

another, don't look at ppl if u r not feeling comfortable or choose one person with whom u feel comfortable. look straight ahead in the wall just above the audience and try to make instantaneous eye-contacts with ur audience.

if they laugh, laugh along with them. make fun of urself saying something like " that was such a fool of me...hehehe..." before they speak something.

and most important, choose the topic u know the best.

What i do is acknowlwdge that audience have less knowledge than you regarding the subject matter u r about to present. It helps a lot during Q&A. Also don't overwrite in slides and take it as a story u r about to tell rather than giving indepth information. If anyone is interested further...they will come after presentation and ask u more bout that. Last thing be prepared to say "I don't know" to questions u don't know...people don't take it as your lack of knwledge, its something that u didn't looked into. These things helped me a lot while i was doing my research presentations in conferences. I hope it helps.

when you stand on that podium or in front of your class, you WILL be scared no matter what. dont fight your fear. Accept that you will be scared. As your legs start to tremble, as your throat runs dry,as your heart pounds, and your head dizzy......PAUSE......give yourself five seconds and observe yourself getting scared. observe, watch, see  yourself getting scared right there while you are about to freeze with fear.... once you stop fighting fear and start understanding fear, it should go away.....

Don't be disheartened. It has more to do with our culture than yourself. I have been down that road and I have also improved a lot since. Few things to remember..
i) Practice a lot before the presentation. Its not that you don't know how to speak, its just that you can't speak in front of the crowd
ii) Try practicing standing instead sitting
iii) Take a bottle of water with you at the presentation
iv) Try to speak slowly
v) Make your presentations short until you get a hang of it and try to improve on it as you go along
Here, I am speaking with my experience... Everyone is different, so it might not suit you. The best is try to develop you own plan and try to follow it.

.

Believe it or not, even the most eloquent speaker would feel exactly the same as you do!

They say : I read : "Practise your speech in front of a mirror". That helps gain confidence to face whatever audience density there is. Personally, i find the idea funny .. but mind it, that works!

11 Hidden Causes Of Public Speaking Stress

  1. Thinking that public speaking is inherently stressful (it's not).
  2. Thinking you need to be brilliant or perfect to succeed (you don't).
  3. Trying to impart too much information or cover too many points in a short presentation.
  4. Having the wrong purpose in mind (to get rather than to give/contribute).
  5. Trying to please everyone (this is unrealistic).
  6. Trying to emulate other speakers (very difficult) rather than simply being yourself (very easy).
  7. Failing to be personally revealing and humble.
  8. Being fearful of potential negative outcomes (they almost never occur and even when they do, you can use them to your advantage).
  9. Trying to control the wrong things (e.g., the behavior of your audience).
  10. Spending too much time overpreparing (instead of developing confidence and trust in your natural ability to succeed).
  11. Thinking your audience will be as critical of your performance as you might be.

10 Key Principles To Always Keep In Mind

#1---Speaking in Public is NOT Inherently Stressful

#2---You Don't Have to be Brilliant or Perfect to Succeed

#3---All You Need is Two or Three Main Points

#4---You also Need a Purpose That is Right for the Task

#6---Humility and Humor Can Go a Long Way

#7---When You Speak in Public, Nothing "Bad" Can Ever Happen!

#8---You Don't Have to Control the Behavior of Your Audience

#9---In General, the More You Prepare, the Worse You Will Do

#10--Your Audience Truly Wants You to Succeed
