After the abolition of the 240-year-old monarchy in Nepal, the Maoist-led government is set to remove all statues of the former kings in the Himalayan nation.
Deputy Prime Minister Bam Dev Gautam announced that the government would remove all statues of erstwhile kings from across the country and replace them with figures of national heroes.
“The government will remove all statues of ex-kings as it does not look good in republic Nepal,†the Deputy PM said, adding that the government will soon take a final decision on the issue.
During the decade-long people’s war, the Maoist soldiers, campaigning for abolishing monarchy, had destroyed several statues in different parts of Nepal. There are several hundred statues of former kings across the country. The government may consider storing the statues of the former kings in a museum, Gautam said.
