I wanted to know how many Chemical Engineers are out there from Nepal (just starting.. graduated.. graduated long-ago ..or now working).
I am about to graduate from a top-ranked university in chemical engineering in US. But as frustrating as it sounds.. I haven't been able to get opportunities to work. All the companies that visit college or the ones I try to apply have one thing in common: "we don't hire international students".
How do you deal with that situation? (you know what I mean.. the catch-22... need green card to find a job.. need job to get green card!)
If you are working, what kind of company? Any suggestions (please keep it clean).. are welcome.
Please share your experiences even if:
-you are not in the same field..
-you had been through this situation.
-you know anyone who had been in/through this situation.
I need serious suggestion. Please share your thoughts.

same story here mate!!! i am senior in chemical and biological engineering right now. i just had interview with cargill and that's what they said to me. everything went aright except me being international student. i wanted to do co-op or intern, before i graduated, as it is almost impossible to get job without any experiences.

Not a Chem Eng. but am in the same situation.  Citizenship is a must to get into the industry related to my education. The best route I thought of and am following is:

- Try to find closely related industries if not take whatever engineering job you can find.
- Build your experience (albeit in a different industry) and obtain the coveted GC.
- In the mean time try to take couple of grad classes related to your industry just to show your commitment and interest in the field.
- Hopefully you can infiltrate back into your desired industry with a GC.
- One thing in favor (at least in Aerospace Industry) is that most engineering positions requiring up to 3-5 years experience (time to get green card if everything goes well) are not as picky about previous experience as long as it is in engineering.  They are willing to train you for their specific needs.

Hang in there. Good Luck!

Hello Guchha Chor!

As far as I have understood………When a company hire a candidate, they do not expect the candidate to know everything and they basically hire employee and train them (I.E the employee will be working under supervision). Then after the period of 2-3 years the company will get more out of this employee because he would have learned most of the things he needs to for his field. But In case of international student it's not certain that the employee will be working for that company in next 5 years. Until and unless you have a Green Card it's hard to find JOB.

Try your luck with some private company. If the company you are applying has some link with the federal government…..(Meaning…if the company is under federal contract or the company works as the contractor of the federal government ) than the company wont hire you because it's illegal to hire you due to the executive order issued by the BUSH Administration in 2002( Which is active till today). But, Private company may take a chance and hire you even if you don't have green card provided that they are not under federal contractor.

I am also doing Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and I too don't have Green Card but my career service officer in the University told me that it would be hard but not impossible to find the job in my filed. The Career path website of my university has many job posting where the requirement is F1, Greencard or US Citizen. I am not scheduled to graduate until 2011 fall.

please be informed about this

VISA MANTIS: Visa Mantis applies to individuals who are subject to the Technology Alert List (TAL). This list is responsible for the most dramatic delays in non-immigrant visa processing.  The TAL was created over concerns that an illegal transfer of controlled technology (or activities) may impact or become detrimental to Unites States national security. The main goal of the TAL is to stop the potential growth and development of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) within the previously listed terrorist states. The Visa Mantis clearance affects primarily non-immigrant workers in biotech and healthcare fields, but can also impact a number of fields that would not appear to affect U.S National Security, such as landscaping, community housing, and marine acoustics. Visa Mantis is essentially a name-check procedure used for U.S Government-sponsored visa applicants (areas may include: business, education, training, and scientific exchange programs) that fall under the scope of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as well as applicants involved in the fields listed in the TAL.

Chemical Engineering also comes under TAL .

Best to get into a PhD program.  With a doctorate, you'll have the option of joining a pharmaceutical company.
